Ebony Coca Cola Festival

CCA participated in the Ebony CocaCola Festival to raise HIV/AIDS awareness and celebrate the hope, spirit and cultures of the African people. The three-day festival, took place June 3-6, 2004 on Goree Island. Approximately, 11000 people attended the festival. Proceeds from the sales of the tickets were donated to an HIV/AIDS orphanage in Senegal. Coca Cola, a CCA member company was one of the main sponsor of the Festival.

World famous entertainers lent their support to this events including performance by Yousso Ndour(Senegal), Jimmy Cliff(Jamaica), Magic System(Ivory Coast), MC Solar(France), Diam's (France), Rachid Taha (Algeria)

Workshop on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights

(Droits Humains et VIH/SIDA: Atelier de validation et de dissemination)

  • This Conference was organized by UNDP, JURISAIDS, UIDH
  • Participants from UNAIDS; Futures Group; UNESCO also attended the Workshop.
  • 9 countries participated in the workshop: Cote d’Ivoire, Rwanda, Tchad, Togo, Senegal, Burundi, Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burkina Faso.
  • The goal of the conference was to educate decision makers and the public and private sectors,
  • To promote policy and legal responses to HIV/AIDS that respect human rights.
  • To link people working with or concerned by relevant social and legal issues.
  • To limit the spread of HIV/AIDS and reduce the impact on those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Meeting With Member Companies operating in Senegal:

The meetings with CCA member companies operating in Senegal focused on building partnerships in the design, implementation, and development of HIV/AIDS workplace policies.  

Coca Cola Africa:

Coca Cola Africa is Africa's soft drink leader and the continent's largest foreign consumer-products investor. Coca Cola beverages are bottled in over 170 plants and serve around 850 consumers, throughout Africa. With almost 60,00 employees on its payroll, The Coca cola compagny is Africa's largest private sector employer. Coca Cola Africa is in the process of building a business coalition against HIV/AIDS. This coalition will be made of private Sector Enterprises operating in Africa.

Entreprise Works/Senegal (EW/Senegal):

EnterpriseWorks Worldwide (formerly Appropriate Technology International) is a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable, enterprise-oriented solutions to economic challenges in the developing world, primarily in Africa and Asia.

Entreprise Works is looking to design and implement an integrated program that develops leadership and business skills, provides productive employment opportunities, and curbs STIs, HIV/AIDS, and drug abuse among at risk youth in the Casamance.

Africare:

Africare has been involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Senegal since the early 1980s. Africare recognizes that particular emphasis needs to be placed on rural areas and provinces, where services are almost non-existent and human and material resources are scarce.

On June 11, 2003 I met with Mamadou Toure, human Resources Director of Shell Senegal. Shell Senegal has an ongoing HIV/AIDS program. Mr. Mamadou Toure further stated that Shell Senegal would be interested in working with CCA to develop an HIV/AIDS programs for Shell’s truck drivers. The trucks drivers are contractors for the most part and do not have medical benefits. Shell Senegal was identified by the National AIDS Council of Senegal as company that would qualify for the MAP program sponsored by the World Bank. Digital Freedom Initiative (DFI):

DFI was launched on March 4, 2003 by The US Department of Commerce with the Department of State, the Agency for International Development, the Peace Corps and the Freedom Corp to promote economic growth for small businesses and entrepreneurs in the developing world through information and communication technologies. DFI Senegal is interested in including HIV/AIDS components to their educational centers.

 

Meeting with the Senegalese Public Sector:

Committee National de Lutte Contre Le SIDA (CNLS):

Dr. Ndoye, Executive Director of the CNLS is already receiving funds from Gates Foundation as well as from the World Bank and Dr. Ndoye is the Executive Director of the MAP program. CNLS received a budget of 4 billions CFA about $8 millions US dollars from the MAP program. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, CNLS is providing free ARV to all PLAW (People Living with HIV/AIDS).

Conseil National du Patronat, CNP (Senegalese Business Council):

Conseil National du Patronat (The Senegalese Business Council) to discuss possible collaboration between CCA and CNP. In 2004, the CNP designed a HIV/AIDS program to engage the Senegalese private sector in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The goal of the program is to assist local Senegalese companies in the design and implementation of HIV/AIDS workplace policies. The duration of the program is 4 years and the CNP aims to enroll a total 320 companies (80 companies per year).

Society of African Women against HIV/AIDS (SWAA):

SWAA's mission is to advocate on behalf of women, children and families in the fight against HIV/AIDS. SWAA mobilizes communities by strengthening capacity to prevent, control, and mitigate the impact of the epidemic. Today SWAA is the only pan-African AIDS organization working with and for women and their families based on locally determined needs and priorities. SWAA mobilizes communities by strengthening capacity to prevent, control and mitigate the impact of the epidemic. Today, SWAA is a network of 40 grassroots country offices.

Interviews with the Press:

  • Le Soleil: I was interviewed by Ibrahima Khaliloullah Ndiaye a journalist at the Soleil a Newspaper in Senegal to discuss the goals and mission of CCA and those of the CCA HIV/AIDS Initiative and the Ebony Coca Cola Festival; I also discussed the 2003 CCA-Business summit. The article was published on the June 11, 2004 edition of the Soleil and was also posted on the AllAfrica.com website.
  • APS: I was interviewed by the APS to discuss the Ebony Coca Cola Festival, the goals and mission of the CCA HIV/AIDS Initiative and our public-private partnership initiative. The article was published on the June 11, 2004 edition of le Sud Quotidien.
  • Sud FM Radio: I did an interview with Baye Oumar Gueye of Sud FM Radio June 8, 2004 to discuss the goals and mission of the CCA HIV/AIDS initiative. The interview was aired on June 9, 2004.
