Profile
The Hon. Peter S. Watson, prior to becoming President & CEO of the U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corporation, was Counsel to Winthrop Stimpson Putnam & Roberts advising on international business and trade policy matters. He concurrently served as Senior Advisor to Armitage Associates, L.C.
Prior to joining Winthrop Stimpson, Watson served as Chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission. In addition to his five years on the Commission, Watson served at the White House as Director of Asian Affairs at the National Security Council, and as Special Advisor to the President of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation.
Dr. Watson remains a Visiting Professor at St. Peter’s College, Oxford University, at its Annual International Business Programme. He is also on the Board of Visitors for the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University.
In addition, he is a distinguished lecturer at Georgetown University’s School of Business, and serves as an Advisory Board Member for Georgetown University’s Journal of Law and Policy in International Business and U.C.L.A’s Pacific Basin Law Journal.
Dr. Watson is former Chairman of the State Bar of California’s International Practice Committee, and is former Chairman of the International Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Military Order of the Carabao, founded in 1900.
Dr. Watson holds L.L.M. and Doctoral degrees in International Economic Relations from McGill University, and an L.L.B. from Auckland University Law School. He also holds an M.B.A. in International Business.
Watson has published several articles and books on international business and trade law, including The Economic Arsenal in the War Against Terrorism (2002); is the principal author of Completing the World Trading System: Proposals for a Millennium Round (1999); is a co-author of National Conformity Assessment Schemes: Non-Tariff Trade Barriers in Information Technology (1999); and contributor to Free Trade: Risks and Rewards (2000).
On September 24, 2001, Dr. Watson delivered the Annual Gauer Distinguished Lecture in Law & Policy, previously presented by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and President George H. W. Bush.
On January 1, 2002, Queen Elizabeth awarded Dr. Watson with the decoration as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM).
