Kevin W. Murphy is Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy, Environment and Materials in the International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. In addition, he serves as Chairman of the Department’s Afghanistan Reconstruction Task Force.

Mr. Murphy directs a staff of over 60 industry analysts and international trade specialists dedicated to improving market access and competitiveness for a number of American industry sectors, including energy, environmental technologies, chemicals, forest products, building materials, metals, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.

Prior to being named Deputy Assistant Secretary in July, 2001, Mr. Murphy was Senior Policy Advisor to Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans. In that role, he served as Secretary Evans’ staff member for the U.S. Energy Task Force led by Vice President Cheney.

Previously, Mr. Murphy served as Counsel of the Bush-Cheney 2000 Campaign in Austin, Texas, where he was responsible for advising staff on compliance with federal election laws, overseeing each state’s presidential electors process, and managing contracts and litigation. He was later appointed as Counsel to the Bush-Cheney Presidential Transition Team.

Prior to joining the Bush-Cheney Campaign, Mr. Murphy was Deputy Counsel of the Republican National Committee. During that time, he served as Deputy General Counsel to the Rules Committee of the 2000 Republican National Convention; as a Counsel to the Platform Committee of the 1996 Republican National Convention; and as Counsel to the RNC Rules Committee. Mr. Murphy also directed the Republican Party’s 2000 delegate selection and allocation process, and served as its Counsel to the Advisory Commission on the Presidential Nominating Process.

Formerly, Mr. Murphy was Legislative Assistant to Congressman Charles Taylor (R-NC), handling a range of issues including foreign affairs and international trade. He also served as Associate Staff for the U.S. House Commerce, Justice, State and Judiciary Subcommittee on Appropriations.

Mr. Murphy has a B.A. from Indiana University, and a J.D. from Indiana University School of Law.
