A GREAT POTENTIAL LAYS
MOSTLY UNEXPLOITED
The region is well-endowed with energy resources:
   * All are hydrocarbon producers, except for Central African
Republic whose border, however, is close to the Doba basin
region in Chad and the oil-producing region of Sudan.
   * the region contains 8% of African proven reserves (about 6
   billion barrels).
   * Oil production, of 870,000 b/d, is somewhat above that of
Angola (750,000 b/d) and is expected to grow fast (by 50%
until 2003), mostly in Equatorial Guinea and Chad.
   * Natural gas reserves are estimated at 9.6 trillion cubic feet,
of which 3.5 billion cubic feet is produced in Gabon.
   * A hydropower generating capacity of about 1095 MW while
the potential is estimated at over 500000 MW, mostly in
   Cameroon.
