The problem of road safety in Africa in particuar has reached crisis proportions with 12 African nations making the list of the 15 countries with the highest transport fatalities, ExxonMobil Corporation and the World Bank take a look at what is constraining road safety in Africa, what is currently being done to address the issue, and explore the potential for areas of cooperation between business and government in this area. Speaker(s): Lead Phase-Out Initiative in Africa Bill Flis, Global Issues Manager Patrick Bultynck, Sr., Urban Transport Economist Using leaded gasoline perpetuates air pollution from motor vehicles, and exposure to lead presents health concerns, particularly in children. While leaded gasoline has been eliminated in OECD countries, it is still being widely used throughout Africa. The June 2001 Dakar conference on the phase-out of leaded gasoline successfully addressed this issue, as participants representing 25 sub-Saharan African countries committed to phase out leaded gasoline by a target date of 2005.
