Using leaded gasoline perpetuates air pollution from motor vehicles, and exposure to lead presents health concerns, particularly in children. While leaded gasoline has been eliminated in OECD countries, it is still being widely used throughout Africa. The June 2001 Dakar conference on the phase-out of leaded gasoline successfully addressed this issue, as participants representing 25 sub-Saharan African countries committed to phase out leaded gasoline by a target date of 2005. This CCA workshop builds on the success story of Dakar to look at why lead phase-out is important, and how cooperation across the public and private sector can effectively address environmental issues in Africa.
