African GSM Network Operated by Titan Reaches More Than 41,000 Subscribers
SAN DIEGO, CA January 10, 2001-The Titan Corporation today announced that more than 41,000 subscribers are now using the services of Libercom, the GSM mobile network that Titan is jointly operating with the Office des Postes and Telecommunications (OPT) in Benin, Africa. This exceeds the first year goal of 12,000 subscribers by nearly 250% in the first eight months of operation.
Libercom launched service in May 2000 as the first company to offer digital GSM service in Benin. The Libercom network was deployed by Titan with the assistance of Alcatel and is part of a larger Build, Co-Operate and Transfer agreement between the OPT and Titan. Sofrecom, a subsidiary of France Telecom, has been assisting with the marketing, sales and customer acquisition efforts. At the time of the launch, Titan indicated that Libercom's goal was 20,000 subscribers after the first few years of commercial operation. With more than 41,000 subscribers Libercom has succeeded in exceeding both its one-year and longer term goals.
"The rate of subscriber growth in Benin is a testament to the growing demand for telecommunications service in underserved markets. Mobile telephony, in particular, is an area with explosive growth potential as confirmed by recent statistics from the International Telecommunications Union showing that emerging markets such as Africa are experiencing some of the fastest subscriber growth in the world. As a result of our experience in Benin, we look forward to continuing to build our presence on the African continent," said Gene W. Ray, Chairman, President and CEO of Titan.
Headquartered in San Diego, California, The Titan Corporation creates, builds and launches technology-based businesses, offering innovative technical solutions. Three of Titan's four core businesses develop and deploy communications and information technology solutions and services. In addition, Titan markets the leading technology for the electronic pasteurization of food products and is continually identifying promising technologies suitable for commercialization. The company has 7,600 employees, annualized sales of approximately $1 billion and total backlog in excess of $2.2 billion.
