James A. Harmon, Chairman of the Board
James A. Harmon is Chairman and Chief Executive of Harmon & Co., an international investment bank founded in 2001 to provide strategic advice to major corporations and governments.
Mr. Harmon served as the Chairman, President and CEO of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) until June 1, 2001. Nominated to a four-year term by President Clinton, Mr. Harmon was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 12, 1997.
During his tenure at Ex-Im Bank, Mr. Harmon successfully guided the Bank through financial crises that hit the economies from Asia to South America to Russia. Mr. Harmon was an advocate for proactively expanding Ex-Im Bank's business into new markets. He focused the Bank on new approaches including financing guarantees of local currency, lending to sub-sovereign entities and building a partnership with the private sector to share risk. He placed greater emphasis on supporting more U.S. exports to sub-Saharan Africa. Mr. Harmon was the first Ex-Im Bank Chairman to travel to southern Africa, and under his leadership, Ex-Im Bank business in Africa rose from $50 million in 1998 to nearly $1 billion in 2000.
Prior to entering government service in 1997, Mr. Harmon was with Wertheim & Co., the international investment bank. At Wertheim, Mr. Harmon oversaw the expansion of the firm's domestic and international investment banking activities. In 1986, he initiated the strategic partnership between Schroders plc (UK) and Wertheim that created the global investment banking firm of Schroder Wertheim & Co. Mr. Harmon served as Chairman and CEO of the firm from 1986 to 1996.
Mr. Harmon is a member of the Board of Directors of Questar Corporation, an integrated gas exploration, distribution and pipeline company. He is a Trustee Emeritus of Brown University and Barnard College. Mr. Harmon is also a member of the Board of Directors of Africare and the World Resources Institute and is a member of the New York City Partnership's Civic Leadership Council and the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a former member of the Advisory Committee on International Capital Markets and the Nominating Committee of the Board of the New York Stock Exchange, Inc. and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Securities Industry Association.
Mr. Harmon received a B.A. in English Literature from Brown University and an MBA in Finance from Wharton Graduate School, University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Harmon is married to Jane Theaman Harmon, who is a theatrical producer in New York City, and is the father of three children.
