Non-Communicable Disease in sub-Saharan Africa

CCA and ACS Recommendations for Addressing NCDs in Africa Presented by Haskell Ward at CCA US - Africa Private Sector Health Conference (Oct 4-6) (click to view)

In June 2010 CCA and the American Cancer Society (ACS) launched a new 3-part Working Forum on Noncommunicable Diseases in Africa. Throughout the summer of 2010, this small forum of key stakeholders discussed how the private sector -- particularly CCA members -- can work to prevent, screen and treat non-communicable disease in Africa through sustainable initiatives, projects and partnerships.

The Honorary Chair of the forum was Haskell Ward, CCA Vice-Chairman and ACS' Global Health Strategic Advisory Committee Chair. The formation of the forum was partly driven by the recent U.N. resolution to hold a special summit on NCDs in the developing in 2011. (Click here to learn more about the U.N. resolution).

Ward presented the final report by the forum on October 6, 2010 at the morning plenary session of CCA's 2010 US - Africa Private Sector Health Conference. The session, entitled "Looking Beyond Infectious Disease: Sustainable Investments in Comprehensive Health Care," was moderated by Tim Baker, Senior Health Executive at Northrop Grumman. Ward was joined by Dr. Silver Bahendeka, Chair of the Africa Region for the International Diabetes Foundation; Amy Shannon, Advisor, Health and Productivity at Chevron Corporation; and Dr. Samuel Adeniyi-Jones, Director, Africa Region, Office of Global Health Affairs, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
